Each year, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recognizes the innovative efforts of businesses across Canada in improving the integration of newcomers into the labour market. Today, the Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the winners of this year’s IRCC Employer Awards for Newcomer Employment.
The 4 winners were commended for their exemplary work to help newcomers find and retain jobs, and to enhance their employment skills. These organizations have taken exceptional steps to welcome and value newcomers entering the labour market, and to support their overall settlement and integration in Canada.
The 2020 winners are:
- Glen Haven Manor—New Glasgow, Nova Scotia
- KPMG in Canada—Toronto, Ontario
- MUFG Fund Services Ltd.—Halifax, Nova Scotia
- White Hat Drycleaners and Commercial Laundry—Campbell River, British Columbia
Minister Mendicino made the announcement at the 2020 Employer Council of Champions Summit and Awards, organized by Hire Immigrants Ottawa. The summit brings together business, government and civic leaders to engage in a dialogue about the effective integration of refugees and immigrants into the labour force, and to celebrate employer excellence.

- Since 2015, IRCC has been recognizing private businesses that support the successful labour market integration of newcomers in Canada through these awards.
- Glen Haven recently recruited 15 continuing care assistants from Kenya and Jordan through the Economic Mobility Pathways Project.
- KPMG mentored 28 newcomers in 2019 and have hired 13 newcomer mentees to their firm over the course of their involvement with the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council’s Mentoring Partnership program.
- Since January 2019, MUFG has hired 27 staff who were new to the province and 19 new international graduates. Of these 46 newcomers hired, the retention rate is 91%.
- Seven of 10 employees at the Campbell River-based White Hat Drycleaners and Commercial Laundry are newcomers to Canada.
